How do they protect us from blue light? And what is it? why do we need to protect our eyes from it? These are a few questions I got while buying my glasses. What are Blue Vision glasses/Blue Light glasses/lenses?

Blue light blocking glasses/lenses are a type of lens specially designed, that is said to block or filter it out coming off of the digital screens.

What is Blue Light?

The human eye can see a very short spectrum i.e., the visible light spectrum which includes blue light. Blue light transmits high-energy waves. They are less powerful than UV waves.

Sources of Blue Light – Natural and Artificial

There are many artificial sources of it, like LED lights, including those found on TV screens, smartphones, tablets, computers, etc. According to DataReportal – Worldwide, the average person spends a total of 6 hours and 57 minutes looking at a screen each day (for internet-connected activities).

Is it good or bad for the eyes?

Free Woman Wearing Hood and exposed to Blue lightGenerally, it boosts attention, reaction times, and mood, which are advantageous during the daytime and on the other side it can be disadvantageous during nighttime. Our phones, tablets, tv, etc used for relaxation after our hard day at work is increasing our exposure to blue wavelengths, especially during the night.

Do the Blue Bight protection glasses help us from it?

Yes, it is mainly from electronic devices and led lights.  Especially if you work a night shift or use a lot of electronic devices at night, consider wearing blue-blocking glasses or installing an app that filters the blue/green wavelength at night.

What precautions do we need to take to avoid its effects?

  • Famous 20/20/20 strategy: where we can avoid long-time constant exposure to electronic screens.
  • Adjusting the ‘Night light’ settings in the devices: we can reduce the strength of the blue light emitted by the device.
  • You can also purchase blue-light-filtering screens to slip over your electronic screens when you’re working at night. The filter could cut the glare of your screen.

Conclusion:

With the increased usage of electronic devices with screens, many people are facing a lot of eye/vision-related issues due to increased exposure to blue light (BL). Blue Vision glasses/lenses are more efficient for those who work during night hours. In addition, reduction of screen time after sundown, using night light settings in the devices, using BL filtering screens, and following the 20/20/20 strategy during both daytime and nighttime help to reduce light exposure. Next time while choosing your glasses make sure you are buying according to your requirement and usage or consult your Ophthalmologist.
